The Euros’ Best MomentsWritten by Marcus Hall in Sport on May 16th, 2016
Take a look back at our choice of the best moments in The European Championship history…
The only place to start is my personal favourite Euros moment: Paul Gascoigne’s classic against Scotland during Euro 96.
Greece The Unlikely Winners
When Greece beat hosts Portugal in the opening game of Euro 2004 it was a big surprise. However the Greeks weren’t finished there, they went all the way to the final and beat Portugal again to lift the trophy. Therefore producing one of the biggest shocks in football history.
Marco van Basten Scoring That Goal
This is a pretty special goal to score at any time, but in a final as well. Awesome.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic Doing What He Does
Whether you think he’s amazing or not, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has done some pretty impressive things during his career, and this at Euro 2004 is definitely up there.
Denmark – The Original Underdog Story
Greece winning in 2004 was a shock, but Denmark winning was probably an even greater shock, due to the fact they weren’t even meant to be at the finals.
The Panenka Penalty
In the final of Euro 76 Antonin Panenka stepped up in the penalty shootout with the chance to win it for Czechoslovakia. He proved how calm he was under pressure, by dinking the ball down the middle. The Panenka penalty was born.
