20 Best Movie RivalriesWritten by Tori Attwood in Entertainment on March 23rd, 2016
No hero is complete without his evil nemesis. As we await the release of the highly anticipated Batman vs Superman, we take a look at the best movie rivalries of all time:
1. Professor X vs. Magneto (The X-Men franchise)
It’s that old classic of former friends who are torn appart by their differing ideas and end up fighting each other. Except this time there’s tonnes of superpowers and mutants involved.
2. Chazz Michael Michaels vs. Jimmy MacElroy (Blades Of Glory)
Arch enemies on the ice rink and total polar opposites – Chazz being a butch and overtly masculine sex god and Jimmy being an effeminate and ‘sensitive type’ – the ludicrous rivalry between these two ice skaters who are forced to work together makes for the perfect comedy.
3. Thor vs. Loki (Thor)
Unless you’re an only child, you’re likely to have suffered at the hands of that dreaded sibling rivalry. In Thor, this classic case of sibling rivalry is based on Thor apparently being their father Odin’s favourite son, while Loki lives in his brother’s shadow. If you have siblings, then you can kind of understand why Loki turns into such a badass.
4. Hector vs. Achilles (Troy)
It’s a battle of the best with these two heroes. Amidst the mythical battle of the siege of Troy, these two warriors are named the ultimate fighters on their side and forced to fight to the death old-school style with swords and chariots. It’s pretty impressive.
5. Michael Corleone vs. Fredo Corleone (The Godfather Part II)
A threat on Michael’s life is discovered to have been instigated by brother Fredo who confesses to being upset when he was passed over to head the family.
6. Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Anakin Skywalker (The Star Wars saga)
A mentor/apprentice relationship gives way to brotherly friendship and then adversaries as Anakin gradually slips from the Jedi path and succumbs to the Dark Side.
7. Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort
Potter fan or not, there’s no denying that the rivalry between a kid and a deranged man who’s trying to kill him is pretty intense. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just a children’s fantasy; the Potter films get pretty dark towards the end.
8. Ron Burgundy vs. Veronica Corningstone (Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy)
Ron and Veronica’s love/hate relationship makes for some pretty tense rivalries and quotable moments.
9. Neo vs. Agent Smith (The Matrix trilogy)
Aside from being an epic film in general, the Matrix hosts the ultimate battle between two rivals; Neo, the ‘One’ who is going to break the tyranny from the machines, and Agent Smith, a computer programme designed to keep the virtual world in order. The futuristic battle features some pretty awesome stunts and some brilliant lines.
10. Derek Zoolander vs. Hansel McDonald (Zoolander)
Top model Derek is ousted by hot newcomer Hansel, sparking a professional jealousy in the Blue Steel poser. As is often the case in some rival-based movies, the two really really ridiculously good looking models end of having to work together to save Derek and the modeling world.
11. Maverick vs. Iceman (Top Gun)
The reckless Maverick competes to become top of the class at Navy Fighter School, beating top student Iceman, who considers his rival’s methods to be dangerous.
12. Robert Angier vs. Alfred Borden (The Prestige)
Former friends turned enemies when Angier blames Borden for the death of his wife in an illusion gone wrong.
13. Batman vs the Joker
It’s the award-worthy performances of Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as the Joker that make this comic book rivalry so sinister.
14. Dutch vs. the Predator
If anyone can take down an alien warrior, it’s Arnie. This futuristic rivalry sees man battle with an out-of-this-world beast, and guess what? Man wins.
15. Matt Damon vs. Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed
It’s a classic set up; a rivalry between a cop and criminal who have to work together to keep each other alive.
16. Maximus vs the emperor Commodus (Gladiator)
Gladiator is just one of those movies you have to watch. Maximus gets stripped of his General title and his family murdered by Commodus, a warped Emperor bent on destroying him. It’s the film that made Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix is brilliant in it as the power-thirsty tyrant.
17. John McClane vs. Hans (Die Hard)
The first Die Hard rivalry is by far the best. Bruce Willis is perfect as the cocky American cop determined to save the day, whilst Alan Rickman gives a brilliant performance as a cynical and conniving villain.
18. Andy Dufresne vs. the Warden (Shawshank Redemption)
As if being in prison for a crime you didn’t commit wasn’t bad enough, Andy is manipulated into working for the immoral Warden. It’s the depiction of bad people finally getting what’s coming to them that’s truly satisfying about this rivalry.
19. The Bride vs. Bill (Kill Bill)
Although you don’t catch a glimpse of Bill until the second volume, the scale of the Bride’s rivalry with him is depicted through his extensive list of cronies that she picks off one by one. It has to be one of the best revenge films to date.
20. Luke vs. Darth Vader
This pretty much embodies everything a great rivalry is about. Good vs. Evil. Father vs. Son. Man vs. Machine, and all with light sabers. Epic.
