HOW TO MEASURE YOUR NECK FOR A SHIRT:

Getting your collar size right is about more than just numbers - it’s about all-day comfort and a smarter appearance. A collar that fits right stops that pinched feeling and keeps your tie sitting exactly where it should.

But an accurate measurement is more than just the foundation of a well-put-together outfit. It also cuts out the guesswork when you shop for formal shirts or workwear online, so you get the perfect fit first time.

Step 1: Stand Naturally

To get a realistic reading, start by standing normally - look straight ahead, stay relaxed and keep your shoulders level. If you tense up or pull your chin down, you might end up with a measurement that’s too tight.

Step 2: Position The Tape Measure

Wrap the tape measure around the base of your neck where your shirt collar would normally sit. Make sure it’s flat against your skin and not twisted at the back.

Step 3: Allow Room For Comfort

Take note here, because this is the most important part of the process! Put one finger between your neck and the tape measure - it should feel snug but not restrictive. Having this bit of extra space will give you breathing room in the shirt, so you don’t end up with a tight, uncomfortable fit once it’s buttoned up.

Step 4: Take The Measurement

Write down the measurement in inches - this is how collar sizes are given in the UK. If you find yourself between sizes, round up to the nearest half inch for the best results.

• Don’t pull the tape measure too tight: It should rest on the skin, not dig into it.

• Don’t measure too high: Keep the tape measure at the base of the neck, not up towards the jawline.

• Don’t forget to give some breathing room: Always remember the "one finger" rule - no one wants a suffocating collar!

• Don’t just guess based on your old shirts: Fabric can stretch or shrink over time, so always take a fresh measurement before buying a new shirt.

If your measurement falls exactly between two sizes, we always recommend sizing up. A slightly larger collar will be much more comfortable, and it’ll stop the fabric from pulling across the top button.

Remember to keep your preferred styles in mind. A slim fit shirt will sit closer to the body, while a regular or tailored fit offers more room. Different fabrics and collar types will affect how snug the shirt feels, too. And if you like to wear ties, you’ll want to aim for a slightly more generous collar fit as well.
