HOW TO MEASURE YOUR WAIST: A MEN’S GUIDE TO PERFECT-FIT TROUSERS
Finding the right fit shouldn't be a guessing game. No one’s got time to order a bunch of trousers, try them all on, send the bad ones back… Shopping shouldn’t be that hard. So we’re taking things into our own hands.
Whether you’re after new jeans, sharp chinos or dapper trousers, finding the perfect pair starts with knowing your measurements.
This guide is here to talk you through it. We’ll help you accurately measure your waist so you can shop our collection with total confidence.
WHY AN ACCURATE WAIST MEASUREMENT MATTERS
Be honest - how often do you rely on the size of an old pair of jeans when shopping for new ones?
We’ve all done it, but because of different cuts, a 38-inch in one brand can feel like a 36 in another. Plus, fabric can lose its shape and stretch over time, so your old pairs might be giving you a false sense of fit.
Take a fresh measurement, and you know your clothes will sit properly on your hips, give you a clean shape, and won't pinch at the middle. The perfect fit makes every outfit look intentional, and it helps you move with ease.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MEASURE YOUR WAIST
Measuring your waist is super quick and easy. All you need is:
- A flexible measuring tape: Use a fabric or vinyl one, and avoid metal DIY tapes - they’re too rigid to follow the natural curves of the body.
- A mirror: A full-length one is ideal, so you can check that the tape is level all the way around your back. This will give you a more accurate reading.
STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO MEASURE YOUR WAIST
Accuracy is key when you’re measuring your waist, but follow these simple steps, and you’ll get it right every time.
Find Your Natural Waist
Believe it or not, your natural waistline is often higher than where you wear your jeans. It’s the soft, fleshy area right between your ribs and hips - usually around belly button height or just above. Keep the skin bare so a bulky shirt or joggers don’t add extra inches to your measurements.
Get The Tape Position Right
Wrap the measuring tape around your waist, always keeping it parallel to the floor. Use the mirror to check that it hasn't moved out of place - if the tape is slanted, it’ll make your measurements inaccurate.
Keep Your Breathing Normal
Avoid sucking in your stomach or puffing out your chest - it’ll only give the wrong number and leave you ordering trousers that don’t fit. Just stand tall, keep your feet shoulder-width apart, and breathe normally.
Take Your Measurements
The tape should be snug but not too tight - you should be able to fit one finger comfortably behind the tape. Check the measurement, and this is your true waist size. Don’t forget to write it down so you have it close to hand when you’re trouser shopping.
MEASURING YOUR WAIST FOR TROUSERS VS JEANS
Generally, your natural waist measurement is the one you want. But because trousers and jeans are cut differently, the way you measure can change depending on what you’re buying. Understand the difference, and you’ll make clothes shopping effortless.

MEASURING FOR TROUSERS
More often than not, chinos and formal trousers are designed to sit higher than jeans, closer to your natural waistline. When you’re measuring for these smarter styles, keep the tape just above your hip bone. This will make sure your new trousers sit right, draping down the leg without bunching at the shoe. If you measure too low for formal trousers, you might find that they feel restrictive when you sit down.

MEASURING FOR JEANS
Jeans are almost always worn lower than suit trousers - most modern styles sit on the mid to lower hip. For the most comfortable denim fit, measure the area where you usually wear your jeans, which is often two or three inches below the belly button. If you’re searching for high-rise denim, stick to your natural waist measurement. But for low-rise or standard straight-leg jeans, the hip point measurement tends to be more reliable.
UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT TROUSER FITS
You’ve got your measurement, now it’s time to think about how you want your trousers to sit.
- Classic Fit: These trousers usually rest at the natural waistline, giving a bit more room through the leg and seat. They’re the perfect fit for a traditional suit.
- Low Rise: Many modern jeans and casual trousers sit lower on the hips. If you prefer this style, remember to take a second measurement around the top of your hip bones.
- Tailored or Slim Fit: These trousers follow the body more closely. Having an accurate waist measurement is key here, because there’s less excess fabric to hide a bad fit.
