THE BASICS

There are a whole host of fabrics that suits are made from, some of the most common are wool suits (ideal for winter due to the heavier nature of the fabric), and cotton and linen suits (great for summer as linen is a more breathable fabric).

Each material has its own unique properties that need to be cared for in a particular way. Steaming a suit instead of ironing is a great way to bust the creases while preserving the material’s delicate nature. If you use an iron, lay a piece of cloth between the iron and the material to prevent the fibres from being damaged by the heat.

To keep your suit looking sharp for longer, brush the top material after each wear to remove any hair or debris that may affect the longevity of the suit.

Don’t forget – every material is unique, so make sure you do your research before you take your formals for a spin.

TOP TIP: STORE IT.

Your suit deserves a decent place to stay. Ditch the flimsy wire hanger and invest in a proper one with broad shoulders. This will help your suit maintain its shape. And forget stuffing it in the back of a wardrobe – find a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight to keep it looking its best.

ROTATE IT LIKE A BOSS

Going for formal doesn’t have to cost the earth – a few key suits for those unmissable occasions is all it takes. To switch things up, rotate your favourite suits for different events and try mixing and matching different elements of three-piece suits (like colour, fabric and lining) to give your look a fresh feel, every wear.
